MV Yakima Arriving at Friday Harbor

Friday Harbor, San Juan Island,

The Shot

This scene of the MV Yakima arriving at Friday Harbor, San Juan Island, was shot with a Nikon D200 mounted with an 18-55mm f/3.5-56 lens. The camera was hand held and the photo was taken on a pleasant early afternoon in late March not long after the lunch hour.

The Spot

I was just enjoying a leisurely day visiting the town of Friday Harbor, San Juan Island, when I spotted the Washington State Ferry “Yakima” approach the Friday Harbor Landing.
The MV Yakima is a Super-class ferry built in 1967 to handle the Seattle-Bremerton run. Then she was moved to the Edmonds-Kingston run in the 1980s. . The Yakima is 382 feet in length and can carry 2,500 passengers and 160 vehicles. The ferry has been in and out of service over the years due to routine maintenance and other ship repairs. As of 2019, she still is in service in the San Juan Islands.

Like many, traveling to San Juan Island by a Washington State ferry is half the fun. One might say it is a mini cruise with many sites to see including the beautiful marine landscapes, islands, forests, boats and wildlife.
